Living off of the money left by the Kendis clan does not make one rich, Zesiro muttered, It's a reminder of just how many of us there had been... He felt another pang in his heart, as if an old scar had just been rubbed raw once more.
He fled down the stairs in a rush, not wanting to carry the conversation further. His memories could not bring everyone to rise from their graves.
A monk inquired to where he would be staying for the night, as the sun was starting to set. Zesiro brushed past the fellow, not caring to any form of communication with those he blamed for his son's dramatic change.
He yearned for the welcoming nuzzle from his lover. Where he stayed did not matter, as long as he was with her. He headed into the less fortunate district, looking for her familiar hut.

Father - ! Sethora exclaimed, reaching out a hoof to stop the older stallion. It was far too late, however, and Zesiro was already down the steps and out of the library, shutting the door behind him. Sethora felt a dull ache in his stomach as he stared at the doorway. He really shouldn't have been surprised - really, it had been amazing that Zes hadn't stalked out of the conversation early on.
Maybe, sometime soon, before this gets out of hand, we can talk again... Sethora thought longingly. He sat down to try and study, but it was no use. Shoving the scrolls out of the way, Sethora put his head down, and sighed.
Corovan appeared to be waiting for Zesiro when he walked up to her hut.
At least, she was sitting in front of the doorway, her eyes scanning a battered-up scroll. It was the Numair Crier, the city's newspaper. Her mouth was twisted, eyes squinting. She looked up when Zesiro approached, however, and smiled. I had a feeling I'd be seeing you soon, love, the mare said, standing and setting down the parchment. I've gotten used to your calling days. Finishing the distance between them, Cora ran her muzzle along Zes's cheek in greeting.
Pulling back, she frowned. She and Zes had been together for nearly twenty years; it had become second nature to read his emotions. What's the matter, Zes? Cora asked, concerned with the deep trouble masking his face.

Zesiro answered her statement with an 'Ah' of his own while waiting for her to close the distance. It broke his heart that his son did not carry on with the tradition of his ancestors.
He looked into Cora's eyes when she questioned him. A frown etched onto his muzzle, he turned away for a moment, gazing into the distance.
Sethora refuses the path to Guardianship, The hurt was clear in his voice now. He knew better than to hide his feelings from his lover, He shuns the path our family has taken for centuries. Our own son...
He buried his face in her mane, the anguish almost too great for him to bear.

Cora frowned, her eyes clouding with confusion and worry at the clear pain in Zesiro's voice. What? He refused... Her voice trailed off. Looking from side to side down the alley, the mare quickly began to usher her mate towards her small house. Why don't you explain inside, she suggested. Once she had closed and locked the door behind her and gotten them each a small glass of wine, Corovan sat with Zes. She tried not to let her upset emotions show in her face - she needed to hear the whole story. Now. What happened? Cora asked in a low voice, watching Zes's face anxiously.

((I really need to reply to this more often. Dx))
Zesiro followed her inside, beaten and bruised underneath his hardened exterior. He had always wished for his son to follow in his footsteps, but it seemed he did not know his boy as well as he should. What could he do?
"I told him about going to the wedding between Lothe and the demon..." he started, his dark chocolate eyes gazing off into the distance, "...About if he attended, he would be officially accepted as a member of the Guardian ranks. He refused...my own son..."
Zesiro closed his eyes, remembering past days. Just where had they gone wrong? Should he have taken the children under his tutelage when they were still young?
"I'm not sure what to do, Cora..." He turned to his lover, the age of his many weary years as a General showing in his face.

Corovan felt herself melt with sadness at the pain in Zes's eyes. She couldn't recall if either of them had really had any happy, carefree time. They'd both met whilst in the throes of something savage; Cora, her sanity, Zes, his duties. Cora had lifted herself up, but life had never eased for her, and Zes's duties to the Guardians had only increased. Somehow it didn't seem fair that life only got more difficult as they aged.
Why did he refuse? Did he explain himself? In the nature of his passions, Seth was more like his father than his mother; he didn't usually just blow things off like she or Sienna would.

The stallion sighed, his vision coming back in to focus on his lover.
"He does not fully understand the ways of the Guardians," He said in an almost whisper, "He calls his own sister a murderer, and claims my judgment is wrong."
He shook his head, ashamed of himself. His dignity had been pulled right out from under him, that much he knew all too well.
"We've been too distant, Cora..." He closed his eyes, "They do not know what kind of family they came from."

Cora was silent as she listened to Zes. Too distant... Did Zes know how she had been feeling lately, the guilt? She hadn't really mentioned it to him yet... it was a difficult subject. She knew that she would have to tell Zes eventually, and sooner rather than later...
Zes, I've been thinking lately, Corovan began. I think... I think you're right. We've done wrong by them, Zes. I should have stayed with you when I got pregnant. Should have come with you and raised the children myself. It's more my fault'n yours. I was selfish.
As for Sienna, all Cora really knew was that she'd been at least one fight, which hadn't ended well at all on either end. But if she was working for the Guardians, surely what she was doing was right, for the best. She couldn't begin to understand how Sethora had managed to pierce his father's heart as cruelly as he had.

Zesiro hung his head, anguish etched across his face as he recalled moments from his memories he would rather keep locked away. His clan, his own parents...what would they say if they were here? Would it have made any difference?
"Don't blame yourself, love," Zes came to the only decision he could, "We were young and restless. We did the only thing we could do..."
He looked around his wife's home. He knew, deep down, he should have insisted she come with him to a better life. But their focuses had been elsewhere---his on finding Akuma, hers on retaining her lifestyle. It had just been easier.
"What matters is what we do now, Cora," he shifted his gaze back to her, If you are ready, I believe it's time we rise in the court of a family member."

Corovan's brows furrowed at Zesiro's words, and she looked down, not meeting his gaze initially. How could she not blame herself? It was really all her doing. If she hadn't been so selfish, the kids would have had a proper upbringing. And certainly the news of Zesiro having a lover in the Lost Desert with two bastard kids hadn't helped his own reputation in the court, of that she was sure. SHe knew enough about politics to be aware of that.
You're right, Zes, Cora said after a moment, looking back up so that her gaze was fixed on Zesiro's. I've been ready. And I should've been years ago. There was still a part of Cora that balked at the idea of being noble - those were people she stole from. For her entire life she had mocked the upperclass. She'd kept her speech rough just to spite them, just to distinguish herself from them.
Now, of all things, she was joining their ranks. It would be a tough pill to swallow. It was close enough to defeat to rankle Cora's pelt. But there were far more important things at stake now.

Zes nodded and stood up. If she was ready, he needed his whole family to be. Should he approach his son again? The wound in his heart that Seth had made was still fresh.
"We've been invited to the wedding between Lothe and his demon fiance." he stated, "It is there where we will present ourselves as visiting members from my sister's court. We must represent them kindly to be able to forge an alliance between Aquari and her kingdom."
He sighed, knowing just how much he was asking of his lover, "Are you fine with this?"
While his sister knew Aquari was a friend to her kingdom, they had to keep up appearances for the council. His and Cora's presence would symbolize so much for everyone. Could family truly do such a thing?

Corovan's gaze went forward. So Lothe and Doma are finally marrying, she murmured. The rumor had been going through the gossip mill that she tried to keep an ear out for, but it was good to hear it from Zes; then she knew it was true. Zes didn't have one false bone in his body. She wasn't sure what she thought about Lothe and Doma. Zes was obviously - and with good reason - deeply troubled by the events, but in Cora's mind, such a situation had been long in coming.
Standing as well, Cora went to Zesiro's shoulder. Of course. You know I would do anything to help you, Zes, she said. I think it's a good way for me to make an entrance as well. There was a beat, then suddenly Cora let out a low chuckle. Perhaps it'll just be swallowed in the whole to-do about Lothe and Doma, but how d'you think the Guardians will react to me? she asked, smiling despite herself. Some no-name thief from the Lost Desert you got into an affair with... it's hardly proper. I can't imagine I'm someone the Guardians would like to have representing them.

A small frown stayed where a pitiful expression had been before, "Yes. I had hope to stall such a thing, but my decision was overpowered with the aid of other news..." He grit his teeth. Early investigations proved that baby #2 was on the way for the younger couple, and speculations had been voiced.
He listened once more, and a small smile replaced the frown from before, "Then they would all be hypocrites," He shook his head, "Though we are destined protectors and held higher than most, many fall prey to the welcoming hands of love. No matter where it is found."
Chocolate eyes gazed into hers, "And if anyone were to insult you, they would be dealing with me.
((Gah, sorry it's so short and took soooooooo long!))

ooc | No prob. ^^ My reply isn't much better. xD
ic | Cora chuckled. She supposed that someone like her coming in would cause a little less stir than a Guardian wedding a Demon. How... am I gonna be introduced, exactly? the mare asked, actually sounding nervous at the idea. I mean, c'mon, Zes, the closest I've gotten to a noble besides you is to steal from them. She sighed and ran a hoof over her face as she thought about the huge hassle this was going to be.
I need clothes, and as much as I hate to admit it, don't you think I need some lessons or something as well? Cora continued, not thrilled at the prospect. I'm not gonna embarass you in front of the Guardians if I can help it.

Zesiro mulled over her words for a moment, thinking of how to answer her. He honestly had no inkling as to how the wedding would be put together, let alone if attendees would be announced at their arrival. Queen Arynaiyae had seen to it that any and all plans she had for the wedding were kept under wraps from his prying eyes.
I'm not quite sure if you will be formerly introduced, love, he voiced his thoughts, Such details were not given to even the best man.
He chuckled a little at his lover's nervousness, They're peophins just like you, dear. Just a tad more pompous, if anything, a grin broke through is hardened features, As for presenting yourself in a noble fashion, just follow my lead. You worry too much.
He nuzzled her neck, knowing the last statement was almost a poke at the disaster that had already occured.
Clothes will be given to you by my sister's court, Zes shook his head, And you could not be any more of an embarrassment than the travesty that is scheduled to happen within the Palace's own walls. You, my dear, will be seen as a gleaming treasure in this dark time.

Corovan laughed at the idea of her presence being a "gleaming treasure." Besides Zes, she couldn't think of anyone that would possibly call her that. And as dark as the situation was becoming for the Guardians, she had a feeling they wouldn't think of her that fondly. ...I'm all packed up, Zes, she said after a quiet moment. Her eyes went to the few bags she had on the floor. Cora was a streetrat. She managed to have a small house, but her possessions were certainly few. After all, items she swiped were fenced far more often than they were kept. So... whenever you think I should move to the Guardians' palace, I'm ready to go. Her voice became stronger, hopeful.
She was ready. Not just her possessions being packed. Mentally, Cora knew... she was ready.
ooc | Not sure where to go... I was thinking maybe Zes could take Cora to the palace to get her sort of comfortable before the wedding?
