Alright, so lately I've been reminiscing and it's been scaring the crap out of me.
It's lead to memories of nursery rhymes and things done with dandelions that, at the time, seemed rather innocent. I'll post a few, then I'll see what you all come up with so we can compare notes If it's a nursery rhyme, post as much as you remember of it and why it, now, freaks you out a little. xD And if you know the origins I'd love to read them! (you all know history is one of my favorite subjects so bring it on)
1. Lizzie Borden
Lizzie Borden had an axe, gave her father forty whacks. When she saw what she had done, she gave her mother forty-one.
Honestly? We sang THIS song as kids?! I mean, this one isn't even funny ha-ha, especially now that we know it actually happened (even though Borden was never imprisoned, because there wasn't proof). Does anyone else remember this song? XD
2. Ring Around the Rosie
Ring around the rosie, pocket full of posy, ashes, ashes, we all fall down!
This one's rumoured to have started way back in the dark ages... DURING THE PLAGUE. The discourse of it:
Ring around the rosie (When you first became ill, you got a fever which made your face flush.)
Pocket full of posy, (Posies were believed to 'scare off' or protect you from the illness, so it was kept in your pocket at all times. Shame it didn't work.)
Ashes, ashes, (This is either 'achoo, achoo'- the sneezing as a result of becoming ill and your lungs filling up with Y. pestis xD. Or, it was a reference to what they DID with the bodies after they were collected for the week- mass cremation.)
We all fall down! (Don't need to explain this one, I hope. xD)
I mean, it's a lovely history lesson and all, but it took me until I was 18 years old to google this damn song and find out what it meant O.o
3. The Dandelion Game
"Momma had a baby and its head popped off!", said as a child picks up a flowering dandelion and rips the head off the stem.
First murder, then talking about fratricide? O.o Seriously? XD That's all I have to say about that one. I'm not sure of where, exactly, it came from, nor can I find it online. (Except that they do it in the Netherlands, too. XD)
Voila. Your turn
