So, I was writing an application essay for the graduate school program today and I'm pretty proud of it. When explaining it to someone, I used the expression, "Not to toot my own horn or anything" and it made me think... There are expressions that I really like and conversely, there are expressions that I loathe. I'm interested to see what expressions/colloquialisms you all love/hate! Here are mine: Love: -"Not to toot my own horn or anything" -"Same difference" (Most people don't like it, but I do.) -"Sketch(y)" (A California way of saying "shoddy" or "questionable". Ex: That hobo looks pretty sketch... we should cross the street.)
| Hate: -"By the skin of your teeth" -"Like beating a dead horse" -"Killing two birds with one stone" -"Cutty" (a California way of saying "inconspicuous" followed by a generally bad idea. Ex: Let's take that cutty path through the forest to get home.)

Cute! I'll add to this, though I can't think of a ton right now. There's a few expressions I just really hate, so I'll post 'em here! Love:- "Awk" (Substituted for the word "Awkward" in certain circumstances. Ex: Someone's being very weird and no one finds it funny; Awk.) -"Break a leg!" -"Workin' like a dog." Hate:-"Getty" (People here substitute the word getty for "Get Together". Ex: Let's have a getty tonight!) -"It's raining cats and dogs!" -"Would you like some cheese with that whine?" (My old teacher would say this to our class practically everyday. Shut up, no one's whining and that's a terrible saying/'joke'. -_-) I'm sure I'll be adding more to this later.

Love: - "Legit" - "Matters" *while slapping bent elbow* (Lol, I think only me and my friends do this... but it's still funny. It's pretty much "Whatever, doesn't matter.") - "Shut the FRONT DOOR!" (Instead of "Shut the f*** up" - one of my friends at college said this and I DIED LAUGHING; now I say it all the time. It's really funny when you start saying it and people think you're about to swear, then you don't.) - "It's raining like a cow pissing on a flat rock." (Via my father. It still makes me laugh.)
Hate: - "A little birdie told me..." (This is... I dunno, like baby-talk or something. It's just annoying.) - "Eff(ing)" (Either swear or don't, okay? Preferably not.)

Love:- Driving me up a wall (The thought of someone going so insane from one person that they'll crawl up the walls to get away from them is hilarious.) -I gotta pee like a Russian race horse (ok dunno how a Russian race horse is different than any other horse, but it's still funny.) -Son of a puppet (A replacement for the obvious; if someone is a 'son of a bitch' then you're seriously insulting their mother, which is rude.) Hate:-Hair of the dog that bit you (Fureal? Maybe it's because I don't understand this idiom. XD) -It'll cure what ails you (Maybe because I need proof of it working, how it works, and why.) -the "Irish wristwatch" tongue twister (Say it three times fast, you'll understand.) -"What a trip!", "Trippy" and "he was tripping" (A trip is a vacation or a stumble; just say 'it's like you're stoned' or something :/; 'trippy' isn't a word, and tripping is the process of falling over something.) -"What a fantastic idea!" or the just the word 'fantastic' out of context ('Fantastic' is derived from 'fantasy', or 'fallacy'. So if something is 'fantastic', it's beyond belief or 'something out of a fantasy'. Not "You're fantastic!"- when you say that, you're doubting if this person is real or not.) ...I have a thing for the etymology of words and using them correctly XD So generally I hate the word 'cool' (If it's cool then it's cold or has cold colours), the phrase "It's a phobia of mine" (because they're rationalising something irrational- a phobia is an irrational fear. You can be afraid of gunshots because it's your survival instinct kicking in- that doesn't mean you're audio-phobic), and many, many others. xD
