The landscape was a chilling sight from any standpoint. Yards of wasted dead land covered the flat area, the only break in landscape a corroded barrel or two, scattered haphazardly. There was literally no vegetation, except perhaps a broken stick here or there that had fallen from a nearby dead tree. It was safe to say that absolutely nothing could ever survive here. No, this land had died long ago. Perhaps once it had been full of life, but now it had mutilated the land so that hardly anything could sustain life. Except perhaps, a creature that had evolved to live here...
Stretching out her long, contorted body, the scrawny creature yawned a gaping mouth, exposing a long forked tongue that jumped back and forth as she closed her jaws. Her eyes were a deep red; the pupils dilating in and out like that of a feline. Getting up to stretch once more, she flicked her long pointed pale blue ears back and forth. She used her long monkey-like tail to pick up a small rock. It seemed to be stained in a sort of glowing residue. Her paws were stained in the same manner.
She sat her small frame, he back arching out behind in her an almost freakish way. Flicking her snake-like tongue, she blinked out into the barren landscape from inside the shelter of a newer looking barrel. It had a skull and crossbones painted on the side in white paint.
Quite suddenly she flicked the rock she had collected out in front of her with her curly, prehensile tail. It landed a few metres away, rolling to a stop. She watched it intently for a few moments, her pierced ears winding, listening intently. Slowly, the rock sank into the earth, disappearing as if it were never there. At seeing this, she plucked up a couple more rocks with her tail and flung them all out in front of her. The one that didn’t sink would be her path.
To anyone else, the searing gases of this landscape would be burning their retinas by now. However, her eyes were adapted which made this the perfect place for her to take shelter, or even residence. Except for the dangers of the sinkholes – you never knew where a new one would appear.

When she had ventured out of the port to go exploring, she had not been expecting to come across a landscape like this. The change from green to brown was abrupt; it had compeltely taken her by surprise when she'd passed from one to the other. Gliding over the dead land, the Pteri felt a shudder go down her spine. She was used to the rolling blue-green of the sea, and lively port towns surrounded by jungles, forests, fields. She'd never seen a place so tainted by death. Even the Haunted Woods was not as chilling as this place.
Spying a nearby tree, blackened and crumbling, the Pteri landed cautiously on one of the thicker branches. She wasn't sure how much she could trust it, but you couldn't have paid her to alight on the ground. There was something dangerous about this land. In her ignorance, however, Faeilwyn also felt herself becoming perversely curious about it. What could have made a once-vibrant place so lifeless?

He was not a very tall being, whatever sort of being he was; it was hard to tell sometimes, and to those who knew him - and few people did - he seemed to ever be changing. One day his ears might be pointed, another they might be rounded at the tips, for example. He seemed to be something of a cat, or perhaps a small pony. It really was difficult to tell. He had a long, snake-like coil for a tail and the eyes of a lion, though they had several layers of filmy eyelids over them at any given time. His paws were padded yet splayed and heavily clawed.
Most people could not stand to be around him for long. He smelled terribly of toxic waste and there was always some sort of fumes leaking from his fur that frightened most people. In any case, he preferred the environment of the wasteland. Most people could not venture there, even if they wanted to, so he was alone most of the time. Not that he minded much. The wastelands were a perfect habitat for him, and he’d learned to be content with being alone most of the time.
As he stepped out from his empty-barrel-for-a-home, he spied a bird-like creature perched in the branches of a dead, blackened tree. Automatically, he assumed the crouch position and crept forward ever so silently.
“Breakfast won’t be hard to come by today,” he thought, and licked his lips in anticipation.

Faeil perked, her head twitching to peer behind her. A sudden feeling of fear had clutched her. Maybe she was in over her head... But she didn't see anything. It was probably her imagination; after all, this place was really creepy. It would be easy for the mind to concoct the idea of a monster slinking through dead landscape, coming steadily towards her, intent on its prey...
The Pteri quickly cut off that thought. What was she, ten years old? She wasn't going to be scared off by her own wild imagination. Still, Faeilwyn was feeling increasingly uneasy the longer she stayed in the barren landscape. She just couldn't shake the feeling that she didn't belong, that the entire area was watching her. Marking her, in a sense, like a trespasser. Not that she knew what fate awaited trespassers around here.

As he crouched, his eyes flicked over his soon-to-be prey, examining the creature for wounds; one of his pet peeves involved fresh, untainted meals each day, and he absolutely detested catching someone else's almost-meal, especially if there were any chance of disease having been transferred in the process. Diseases were usually no big deal, and most of them were not a threat to him, but there was just something about having someone else's germs running rampant through his body. . .
His barbed tail swished violently as he eyed the pteri, and, with a sudden start, he realized that he had no idea just what kind of creature he was staring at. He cocked his head to the left, then to the right, examining the short, stout body, the curious tail, and the sharp little beak. Obviously, this was some kind of... bird?
Automatically, he broke his crouch position and sat down, his barbed tail still swishing behind him as he pondered the strange creature perched in the tree. It had the healthy glow of someone from beyond the wasteland, but it also looked as if it might have been a victim of the toxicities which permeated the area; it didn't look like any bird that he'd ever seen.
Suddenly, his eyes alighted on a creature not too far on the distance. This creature was one he could immediately identify as a wasteland resident, judging by the look of her and the way she threw rocks in front of her to test for sink holes.
"Huh, ingenious," he thought. "She seems like a smart one. Perhaps she could determine what this thing is."
With that, he let out a sound similar to a bark, hoping to get her attention and call her over. He would find out what this mystery bird was before moving on to breakfast.

A swirl of fog and dust swept up behind her as the creature sat down. There were many different small mutated beings here, and most of them she could name - or had given a name to. It was not often that she saw something new in her homeland.
She perked her ears at the sound of a harsh barking noise. She was sure she had heard it before, though, she had to admit she had never found what it belonged to. Mostly, she really didn't care to... if she couldn't eat it, she really had no business with it.
However, her curiosity was starting to get the better of her. Better to rule out what it was... just in case.
Through the mist and poison she could see the familiar outline of a dead tree. She would often come here to dig up some grubs or beetles. However, she would not often see anything perched on it... nothing that big, anyways. It seemed to be some kind of bird...
As she inched closer, she was careful not to make any noise as to scare away a potential meal. Her body spine curved upwards and contracted like a snake's. She stuck out her forked tongue, tasting the air. The pupils in her huge red eyes dialated as she got closer... there was something else here! She simply did not do competition. Except... what was this creature? Was it the thing that had made that loud noise? She was surprised it had not scared the bird-thing away.
She circled around behind both animals, hoping to go undetected, at least for now..

ooc | Sorry sorry sorry! ic | Faeilwyn jumped up, fluttering from the branch, peering about wildly. She knew she had heard something. Something was there! That was just it. Something. But what? What kind of creature lived in a horrible swamp like this? The Pteri was once again overtaken by the urge to fly far, far away. But what if she was followed? What if it was some manner of monster that could fly? And what if she led it back to the ship? There was nothing for it. She'd simply have to confront the beast. She wouldn't rest for a week otherwise. Who's there, huh? she called out. Her voice was swallowed by the fog, which was oddly disconcerting. As if she could sceram and it would simply be enveloped, unheard, into the noxious atmosphere. Who's-- She suddenly break off her cry. Her eyes landed on a shadowy figure on the ground, crouching. She was fairly sure it was the one that had barked. Um... hello there, she said, the words sounding incredibly stupid as she said them.
